Calcutta Rescue is a truly awe – inspiring organisation. Set up as a non-governmental organisation (NGO) operating in Kolkata and rural West Bengal, Calcutta Rescue works towards improving the health and quality of life for the socially disadvantaged in the region.
They provide free pavement health clinics for the homeless in and around Kolkata and also send medical teams out to rural villages to educate the villagers about health issues. They help ex-patients find employment and have set up a weaving and a fair trade unit where traditional skills are used to make craft to sell. The fair trade unit believes strongly in recycling and not wasting materials. They make wonderful bags and mirrors from recycled newspaper and key rings using embroidery and their own hand woven material.
